7 Ways to Bring Creativity Into Your Meditation Practice

The most universal thing people say when I’m leading meditations is that they want to start meditating on their own but feel they don’t have any time to themselves to do it. Starting up a consistent practice is a lot like starting a workout routine, it takes dedication and a desire to make a new habit for the long haul. It sounds like work but before you start cringing- it can be varied and fun! Below are 7 ideas to help bring creativity and freshness to your meditation practice.

  1. Set up a dedicated meditation space. It doesn’t have to be a whole room, just a corner will do.

  2. If you live with people, set your space up in a room so you can close the door. Put something on the outside of the door to let others know you are meditating.

  3. Create an altar in your space, using anything that helps invite a calming atmosphere.

  4. Set targets you can see yourself achieving. Try 3 days a week for 10 minutes at a time to start off.

  5. Practice in nature or in your yard when you can. Meditating with the sounds of birds and listening to the wind are great enhancers to still the mind.

  6. Get a meditation app. Insight Timer, Calm or Headspace are the most popular and there are tons to choose from. I like the ones that have a journal option so you can jot down anything that comes up and refer to it later.

  7. Be gentle with yourself. Finding a stillness where you can actually hear your subtle truths takes time to cultivate.
